Most people who ask us for documents need fewer than they think. Tell us what has come up and we will write the one thing that sorts it, priced before we start.

Not sure which one you need? Call 07557 982407, Monday to Friday 9 to 5, or email hello@whatifhr.co.uk. We will tell you if the answer is none of them.

Where most people are

Something came up, and the paperwork did not cover it

A contract that came from a previous employer, a template site or a friend who runs a similar business. It was fine until somebody asked a question it does not answer.

Have you got a freelancer who now works fixed days for you? A handbook nobody has opened since it was written? Terms that say nothing about your holiday year, your shift pattern or your probation?

The three we get asked for most

  1. 1

Employment contracts. Usually because someone is starting, or because the old one has been copied nine times and nobody remembers where it came from.

  2. 2

Freelancer and contractor agreements. Often when someone started as an occasional freelancer and is now doing fixed days for you.

  3. 3

Handbooks, or the playbook version. One place that says how things work here, so managers stop giving different answers.

How it works

Three steps, and you are not left to work out how to use it

A single document takes about a week from the call. A straightforward handbook takes about two.

  1. 1

    A call

Twenty minutes on what has come up, how you run and who does what. This is where we tell you if you need something different, or nothing at all.

  2. 2

    A draft

Written for your business and sent to you to read. Plain English, so you can tell whether it matches what happens in your place.

  3. 3

    Yours to use

Two rounds of changes are included and that is normally plenty. If you need more than that, we quote it before doing it. Then we show you how to issue it and what to keep on file, because a document nobody sends is no use.

Being straight with you

When buying documents one at a time stops making sense

If you need the contract, the handbook and several policies, buying them separately costs more and leaves you to join them up yourself.

At that point we will tell you to stop and look at a package instead. It is cheaper and you end up with documents that agree with each other.

Before you buy anything

What if half of what you think you need is not required?

Some of this is the law and some of it is preference, and the two get muddled all the time. These posts separate them, so you can see what you must have before you decide what you want.

Can we not just use a free template?

You can, and plenty of businesses do. A template does not know your holiday year, your shift pattern or that two of your people are part-time, and those are the gaps you find at the worst moment. We fill them once.

What is the difference between a contract and a handbook?

The contract is the agreement with one person and some of it is legally required from day one. The handbook is how things work for everyone, and it is not a legal requirement. Most small businesses need the contracts sorted first.

We use freelancers. Do we need agreements for them?

Yes, and it is worth checking they are genuinely self-employed while you are at it. If someone works set hours, uses your equipment and cannot send a substitute, the agreement is not what decides their status. We will tell you what we think before you sign anything.

How many policies do we need?

Fewer than most people expect. At under ten people you can usually cover holiday, sickness and conduct in a few pages that get read. We would rather write three you use than twelve you file.

Can you review documents we already have?

Yes, that is £250 for a contract and it is often the cheapest place to start. You get the marked-up document and a short note on what to change first. Plenty of clients find they need less rewriting than they feared.
