The law in brief

What every employer needs in place

Every business must have a policy for managing health and safety. If you have five or more employees, you must write it down and share it with them.

Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, you must identify what could cause injury or illness, decide how likely and how serious the harm could be, and act to remove or control the risk.

Where most small businesses are

A policy downloaded years ago, risk assessments nobody has looked at since and a first aid box in the kitchen. It usually holds until something goes wrong, then the gaps show at once.

None of it is hard to fix, and it is much easier before an accident than after one.

What we cover

Everything a small workplace needs

Take one piece or the whole set. Every piece of work is quoted and agreed before it starts.

  • Health and safety policy

A policy written for your workplace that says who does what, when and how, and that your team has been shown.

  • Risk assessments

Workplace and role risk assessments, with practical actions to remove or control each risk, and a record you can show.

  • Audits and site visits

A visit to your premises to see how things really work, with a clear list of what to fix first.

  • Health and safety training

Essentials for your team, in person or online, with a record of who completed what.

  • Lone working and specific risks

Lone workers, display screen work, manual handling and the risks particular to your sector.

  • Accidents and reporting

What to do after an accident at work, including whether it must be reported under RIDDOR.

  • Accreditation support

Help to gain the safety accreditations buyers ask for, such as SSIP schemes including Constructionline and Acclaim.

  • Contractor management

Checking the contractors and specialists you bring in are suitable and competent before they start.

  • Safety culture and wellbeing

Measuring safety leadership, engagement and wellbeing with the Health and Safety Index, then acting on what it shows.

Why with your HR

Where health and safety and HR meet

Plenty of people problems start as safety questions, and plenty of safety problems end up as people problems. Having both in one place means nothing falls between two advisers.

  • A member of staff off sick after an injury, and what they can safely do when they return
  • Work-related stress, where a risk assessment and an absence process meet
  • A pregnant employee, who needs a risk assessment as well as the right leave
  • Induction for new starters, where safety and HR paperwork arrive on the same day
  • A safety breach that becomes a disciplinary matter

How it works

Three steps, and you know the cost first

  1. 1

    A free conversation

Tell us about your workplace, your team and what prompted the call. We will say what you need now and what can wait.

  2. 2

    A fixed quote

After a short review, or a site visit where it helps, you get a fixed price for the work, agreed before anything starts.

  3. 3

    Done, then kept current

We deliver the policy, assessments or training, and can keep them up to date as part of a retainer.

Who delivers the health and safety work?

Our specialist health and safety partner, a Member of the International Institute of Risk and Safety Management (MIIRSM) with experience across construction, manufacturing, events, retail and security. You deal with us, so your health and safety and your HR stay joined up.

Does a small business need a written health and safety policy?

Every business must have a policy for managing health and safety. If you have five or more employees, you must write it down and share it, and any changes, with your employees. If you have fewer than five, you do not have to write it down, but it is useful to do so. (Source: Health and Safety Executive.)

Do we need a risk assessment?

Yes. Under the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, employers must identify what could cause injury or illness, decide how likely and how serious the harm could be, and take action to remove or control the risk. With five or more employees, you must record the significant findings.

Can you visit our premises?

Yes. Site visits and audits are part of the service, and they are often the quickest way to see what needs doing.

Can health and safety be added to a retainer?

Yes. Health and safety support can sit alongside a Retained HR Partner plan, so your policies and assessments are kept current along with your HR. We agree the scope and price with you first.
